OUR VICTORY DAY TURNS 103

Following the successful conclusion of the Great Offensive (Büyük Taarruz), the battle came to be known as the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief (Başkomutanlık Meydan Muharebesi), as it was won under the command of Atatürk. After the decisive victory of the Great Offensive, the Greek army was pursued all the way to İzmir, and with the liberation of İzmir on September 9, 1922, Turkish lands were freed from Greek occupation. Although the withdrawal of the occupying forces from the country’s borders was completed later, August 30 symbolically represents the day when the homeland was regained

.First celebrated in 1924 in Afyon under the name Commander-in-Chief Victory (Başkumandanlık Zaferi), August 30 has been officially celebrated as Victory Day in Turkey since 1926.

Happy Victory Day to all.
Here’s to many more celebrations to come.
