Speech of Cafer Okray, Vice President of the Marmara Group Foundation

World Protection Forum, November 11

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to begin my speech by respectfully greeting your high delegation on behalf of the Marmara Group Foundation from Istanbul.

Today, I want to extend my and my colleague’s gratitude to the Kelony Family, who brought us here together. The modern world faces a multitude of challenges and crises, leading to a widening gap in development.

On one hand, the increasing wars and conflicts and the deteriorating ecological environment represent an added dimension of uncertainty. We are going through the birth pangs of a new world order. These pangs indicate a change in the structure of the world order, but at the moment, it seems challenging to predict how this order will take shape.

There is no doubt that behind the scenes of the war between Ukraine and Russia, the Israel-Hamas conflict, the coup in Niger, the build-up in the Indo-Pacific and NATO's proactive expansionist moves, there are signs of "new birth pains".

The international system built under the leadership of the free world after the Second World War is in a dilemma.

As the system generates problems, new points of tension are emerging. While a dangerous war is taking place between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Hamas have unexpectedly come face to face. The recent build-up in the Pacific is another dimension of the impending danger.

The danger is greater than one might think.

In the last two decades, we have witnessed the reckless use of power in different parts of our planet. However, today, we have gathered here not to discuss crises and unforeseen conflicts, but to talk about the most natural common right of humanity, which is to live in prosperity and development.

Yes, how can we create this common right and live better? For the formation of this common right, it is essential for the people of a country to rely on their national conditions, have unique motives, and prioritize peace.

I believe that the people of a country have the greatest say in what the most suitable method of development and the path to peace are for them.

Countries should base their national development on their own strength, and they should hold the fate of national development and progress in their own hands.

Peaceful development can be established with a balance between humans and nature.

This development should be inspired by the development and experiences of other countries as well as its own national conditions.

Of course, development and progress in one place will contribute to and enable common development, peace and coexistence of the world.

This, in turn, will pave the way for progress for humanity and global community.

Development and progress should not happen despite social and ecological civilization. Moreover, if development and progress occur through consultation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution, it will create a hope for a comprehensive and balanced future for the benefit of humanity, and a comprehensive and balanced future will serve as a bridge and connection to the destiny and future of humanity.

And all of this can be the beginning of global development if it is based on a human-centered philosophy. Encouraging sustainable global economic growth will open the door to the majority of developing countries escaping poverty and leading better lives. While we talk about these things, our planet is burning like a fireball.

We are aware of this.

But we believe that we deserve a better world. With this belief, despite the crises we are experiencing, we say dialogue, more dialogue, in order to reach a better world and to live together in peace.

Thank you.
