The relationship between the Marmara Group Foundation and Montenegro is at the highest level. After Montenegro gained its independence, the first Honorary Consul it appointed abroad was Dr. Akkan Suver, President of the Marmara Group Foundation. Therefore, the State of Montenegro trusted Dr. Akkan Suver and granted him the title of "Honorary Consul of Montenegro in Istanbul." The Marmara Group Foundation is grateful to former Foreign Minister Milan Rocen, former President Filip Vujanovic, and former Interior Minister Jusuf Kalemporovic for their contributions to their duties.
When Filip Vujanovic was elected President, Serbia and Montenegro were a single state. During his presidency, Montenegro gained its independence following a referendum held in 2006. This union dissolved peacefully and quietly.
The rapid international recognition is a sign of the successful foreign policy conducted by Filip Vujanovic and his colleagues. Filip Vujanovic served as a successful president and ensured Montenegro became the 29th member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), alongside Albania and Croatia. After gaining independence, Montenegro had two goals: to become a NATO member and to join the European Union.
Montenegro, which has participated in the Eurasian Economic Summits at the level of President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister for years, also ensured the publication of the book "Montenegro," authored by Dr. Akkan Suver, translated into the Montenegrin language. The Marmara Group Foundation is grateful to President Filip Vujanovic and thus to the State of Montenegro for appointing Dr. Akkan Suver as the country's first Honorary Consul.
Dr. Akkan Suver's Honorary Consulship in Istanbul ended on December 31, 2019, with the opening of an official Consulate General in Istanbul. On November 26, 2020, the State of Montenegro showed a courtesy by reappointing Dr. Akkan Suver as Honorary Consul in Balıkesir. On March 5, 2021, the State of Montenegro granted Dr. Akkan Suver Montenegrin Passport and Citizenship. At the same ceremony, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the Montenegrin Medal of Merit. Montenegro holds an important place in the life of the Marmara Group Foundation.
