Biography of Dr. Akkan Suver
Dr. Akkan Suver, who has been serving as the President of the Marmara Group Foundation, which has been active internationally since 1998, represented the State of Montenegro in Istanbul as Honorary Consul for twelve years between May 2008 and December 2019. In January 2020, Dr. Akkan Suver left his position upon the opening of the official consulate of the State of Montenegro in Istanbul. During his tenure as Honorary Consul, Dr. Akkan Suver held the title of Turkey’s first and only journalist-diplomat with a Press Card.
Dr. Akkan Suver, who is the founder of the Eurasian Economic Summits, which have been held continuously since 1998 and have been recognized internationally as a prestigious gathering, is a civil society leader recognized worldwide for his work on peace and intercultural dialogue. In 2001, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Azerbaijan Tefekkür University; in 2010, an Honorary Professorship by Bishkek University of Kyrgyzstan; and in 2013, an Honorary Doctorate by Constanta Maritime University of Romania.
For his intercultural dialogue activities, which he initiated in Turkey and later carried out in the field of international peace, Dr. Suver was honored with the Papal Medal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. To date, he has received the TERAKKİ MEDAL (2006) and the ORDER OF FRIENDSHIP (2011) from the State of Azerbaijan; the GENGHIS KHAN MEDAL (2006), SILVER STAR MEDAL (2009) and POLAR STAR MEDAL (2012) from the State of Mongolia.
In 2011–2012, he served as the rotating President of the Black Sea Caspian Sea International Foundation (BSCIF), headquartered in Bucharest.
In 2012, Akkan Suver’s book “MONTENEGRO” was published.
Akkan Suver’s book “MONTENEGRO” was published in the Montenegrin language in Podgorica, with a foreword by Prof. Dr. Šerbo Rastoder.
On 14 February 2013, Dr. Akkan Suver, who is internationally recognized for his intercultural dialogue activities, was awarded the BALKAN PEACE MEDAL by the Balkan Peace Club.
On 14 October 2014, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the highest Order of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia of Moldova, the “ORDER OF GAGAUZIA”.
On 20 November 2014, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the end of Communism, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the “ROMANIAN STATE ORDER” by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta in Bucharest.
On 23 November 2014, Dr. Akkan Suver was presented with the “STRATEGIC PARTNER AWARD” in Vienna by the Vienna Economic Forum, by former Chancellor Dr. Erhard Busek.
On 17 December 2014, Romanian Ambassador to Ankara Radu Onefrei personally presented Dr. Akkan Suver with the “TURKISH-ROMANIAN RELATIONS FRIENDSHIP AWARD.”
On 21 January 2014, Gagauzia President Mihail Formuzal presented Dr. Akkan Suver with the “20TH ANNIVERSARY FREEDOM MEDAL” as part of the events organized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the autonomy of Gagauzia, which was adopted by the Parliament of Moldova on 23 December 1994.
In 2016, Dr. Akkan Suver was honored by the State of Azerbaijan with the “ENERGY WORKER” Order. In the same year, he was awarded the “WISE AMBASSADOR” diploma by the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Slovenia.
In 2017, he joined the academic staff of Istanbul Istinye University.
In 2017, Dr. Akkan Suver organized the 20th Eurasian Economic Summit.
On 9 June 2017, the State of Albania awarded Dr. Akkan Suver the “STATE CIVIL MERIT ORDER”, presented personally by President Bujar Nishani.
Again in 2017, Dr. Akkan Suver was presented with the Strategic Partner of the Year Award by the Vienna Economic Forum of the Republic of Austria for his peace and dialogue activities in the Balkans.
In 2018, he was awarded the ROYAL MEDAL by Her Majesty Queen Margareta of Romania.
On 11–12 April 2018, he successfully managed the 21st Eurasian Economic Summit.
On 12 November 2018, he was honored with the “GOLDEN MEDAL OF HONOR OF THE STATE OF AUSTRIA” by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen in Ankara.
On 18 November 2018, he opened the Vienna Economic Forum in Vienna as its Guest of Honor.
On 6–7 February 2019, he successfully managed the 22nd Eurasian Economic Summit in Istanbul.
On 3 March 2019, the International Foundation for Sustainable Peace and Development, headquartered in Sofia, awarded Dr. Akkan Suver, President of the Marmara Group Foundation, the MEDAL OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE.
On 21 March 2019, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the “MEDAL OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE” by Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov.
In January 2020, he left his position as Honorary Consul General of Montenegro in Istanbul, which he had held for 12 years, on the occasion of the opening of an official consulate in Istanbul.
On 6–7 October 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic, he organized the 23rd Eurasian Economic Summit under the title “In the Light of the Belt and Road Initiative,” with the participation of 47 countries.
On 16 December 2020, he was reappointed by the State of Montenegro as Honorary Consul of Balıkesir.
On 24 December 2020, he was honored with a CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION by the State Committee on Diaspora Affairs of Azerbaijan for the solidarity he demonstrated during the Karabakh Operation.
On 5 March 2021, President Milo Đukanović of Montenegro granted Dr. Akkan Suver Montenegrin citizenship at a ceremony held in Podgorica. At the same ceremony, President Milo Đukanović presented Dr. Akkan Suver with the MONTENEGRO MEDAL OF MERIT and his passport.
On 8 and 9 July 2021, despite the pandemic, Dr. Akkan Suver held the 24th Eurasian Economic Summit under the theme “Humanity Deserves Better.” Forty-two countries participated in the Summit.
The Azerbaijan Journalists’ Union awarded Dr. Akkan Suver the “HONORED JOURNALIST GOLD MEDAL” during the 24th Eurasian Economic Summit.
On 13 August 2021, the People’s Republic of China honored Dr. Akkan Suver with the “GOLDEN PEN” on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and the People’s Republic of China, for his efforts to develop relations between the two countries.
On 7, 8 and 9 June 2022, he held the 25th Eurasian Economic Summit with the participation of 43 countries. At the same Summit, he was awarded the PEACE MEDAL by the Union of Love and Peace based in the United States of America. Again at the same Summit, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded an HONORARY DOCTORATE and the VECTOR ORDER by the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In August 2022, his book “After the Age of 80” was published.
On 13, 14 and 15 March 2023, he organized the 26th Eurasian Economic Summit in Istanbul with the participation of 44 countries.
On 10 November 2023, Akkan Suver’s new book, “A Past Without Regrets,” was published.
On 12 November 2023, he opened the Vienna Economic Forum.
On 4 December 2023, he opened the World Media Conference in Guangdong, China.
On 21–22 February 2024, Dr. Akkan Suver organized the 27th Eurasian Economic Summit with the participation of 45 countries.
On 4 March 2024, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the LOVE AND PEACE MEDAL by FOWPAL (Federation of World Peace and Love), based at the United Nations.
On 6 April 2024, Akkan Suver’s book “After the Age of 80” was published in the Azerbaijani language in Baku.
On 15 May 2024, Dr. Akkan Suver was presented with the MEDAL OF HONOR in Tirana by the President of the Albanian Parliament and President-in-Office of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), Lindita Nikolla, and its Secretary General, Prof. Dr. Asaf Hajiyev.
On 6 August 2024, Dr. Akkan Suver was awarded the MONGOLIAN STATE MEDAL OF HONOR. It was presented by the Ambassador of Mongolia to Ankara at a grand ceremony in Istanbul.
On 28 January 2025, Dr. Akkan Suver was honored by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with the “HEYDAR ALIYEV AT ONE HUNDRED” MEDAL
Dr. Akkan Suver organized the 28th Eurasian Economic Summit in Istanbul on May 7–8, 2025, with the participation of 44 countries.
On September 19, 2025, the State of Uzbekistan awarded Dr. Akkan Suver the "Uzbekistan State Medal of Friendship of Peoples" at a ceremony held in Tashkent.
Dr.Akkan Suver organized the 29th Eurasian Economic Summit in Istanbul from May 11 to 23, 2026, with the participation of 48 countries
It was awarded to Dr. Akkan Suver (Silver Papal Medal) by Pope Leo XIV, who visited Türkiye on February 25, 2026.
Throughout the years, Dr. Akkan Suver has been honored by various national and international organizations with titles such as Journalist of the Year and Civil Society Organization Leader of the Year.
Over the years, he has represented the views of Turkish civil society at various international meetings in Azerbaijan, the People’s Republic of China, Romania, Spain, Austria, Moldova, Gagauzia, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovenia, Albania, Montenegro, Italy, France, Belgium, Greece, Turkmenistan, Serbia, Georgia and at the United Nations.
Again on behalf of Turkish civil society, he has participated as an “Observer” in elections held at various times in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Ukraine.
Dr. Akkan Suver, one of Turkey’s well-known journalists and writers, has had his books published not only in Turkish but also in Azerbaijani, English and Montenegrin. He currently writes articles for the Gözlem Newspaper, published in İzmir.
