May 19 is an important day for the Turkish Nation. The first step towards freedom and independence was taken that day. The Turkish War of Independence started with Mustafa Kemal Pasha's arrival to Samsun on 19 May 1919. Mustafa Kemal started a movement to save the entire country with his arrival to Samsun. Atatürk's journey to actualize national unity and solidarity has made the nation stronger. In this war, Atatürk fought by putting forth all his strength and the love of the nation. In one of his speeches, Atatürk said; “ I was born on 19 May”. The Great Leader's acceptance of May 19 as his birthday best describes the place and importance of 19 May in our history. The Turkish War of Independence began with the attack of countries such as England and France. The Republic was declared on 29 October 1923 after the war was completed with honor and success. Mustafa Kemal, made 19 May as Youth and Sports Day that made day of our liberation and light our freedom torch and he gifted to Turkish Nation, especially our youth.

Latin Catholic Church Launches Iftar

At the iftar which Ambassador of Turkey to the Vatican Lütfullah Göktaş attended, Orthodox and Jewish Spiritualists were also present together with Monsignor Luis-Miguel Munoz Cardaba, First Undersecretary of Vatican Embassy. For Iftar which is opened with prayer of Sisli Mufti, former ambassador of Turkey to Vatican Prof. Dr. Kenan Gursoy and his wife, the president of the Marmara Group Foundation Dr. Akkan Suver and Secretary General Cafer Okray were among the participants.

European Union Leaders gathered in Romania

In Romania which is the European Union’s term presidency, under the high auspices of Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis, the European Union Minister and officials came together in the Romanian city of Sibiu on the 9th of May European Union day. For the European Day meeting in the city of Sibiu, Romania which the leaders of European countries outside the UK gathered together including Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, Turkey Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Faruk Kaymakçı and Ambassador Fusun Aramaz with on behalf of civil society Dr. Akkan Suver has also joined. At the meeting which civic think-tanks of France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Britain, Lithuania, Poland, Holland, Ukraine attended, Dr. Akkan Suver president of the Marmara Group Foundation while making a speech at the session called; "Which and Whose Fundamental Values?", stressed the importance of statesmanship. Evaluating Turkey's European Union project as a union of peace and stability in his speech Dr. Akkan Suver told the invalidity of thinking the Balkans without Turkey. At the meeting held in Sibiu, European Union leaders expressed their belief in the idea of a single European from the West to the East. 30 years ago, millions of people struggled to be free, and leaders said the divisions would not benefit the European Union. To summarize; The leaders said that “ they will act in unity and solidarity. We will give importance to solidarity even in difficult times.”

We celebrate 9 MAY EUROPE DAY

Today, the Marmara Group Foundation celebrated Europe Day at the Taksim Grand Hyatt Hotel. A panel on “How to Discuss the European Union At The Present Time,What To Do” was held at the meeting where representatives of public and non-governmental organizations, business people and academicians were among the participants. The meeting started with the welcoming speech of the Vice President of the Marmara Group Foundation Engin Köklüçınar and the opening speech of the President of the EU Platform Müjgan Suver, and continued with a panel discussion moderated by the Journalist Writer-Bahçeşehir University Faculty Member Nur Batur. In this panel titled “How to Discuss the European Union at The Present Time, What to Do”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Alemdar, Member of the EU Department at Okan University, Can Baydarol, Member of the European Team, shared their views on the EU and answered the questions from the participants.
